Duke's

Even though Malibu boasts almost 30 miles of coastline, less than a handful of restaurants actually lie directly on the beach. Of these, only Duke's encompasses over 300 feet of postcard-perfect panoramic drama! Duke's is classically nestled on the ocean, providing their patrons with a breathtaking sun-dappled seascape/landscape -- Catalina Island, The Santa Monica Mountains, as well as Los Angeles. The sunsets will stir your imagination as well as stimulate your appetite! If you need more than this glorious view, try a Mai Tai and "dolphin-watching". It works for me! Be prepared to lose all track of time, though. I missed one meeting completely and was 15 minutes late for another. Locals -- you've been warned!!!

Duke's vista is inspiring, but that's not all. Let me give you a little of their background and inception. The first Duke's was built in Hawaii, named for the Hawaiian surfing legend, Duke Kahanamoku, a seven-time Olympic medallist in swimming and water polo. Presently, there are 2 Duke's in Hawaii and 2 in California -- one in Malibu, the second in Huntington Beach.

Duke's authentic Hawaiian decor replicates the Southern California surfing lifestyle. Photos of local stars and surfing legends adorn the bamboo walls, while native Hawaiian vegetation flourishes everywhere. The outdoor "Barefoot Bar" has numerous palm-covered bungalows where you can sink your toes into the sand or literally "wash your cares away" in the surf.

Their dramatic cuisine is a blend of Hawaiian and Pacific Coast styles and flavors. Inspired by renowned Hawaiian chef, Peter Merriman, their menu showcases a plethora of fresh fish and seafood. They also have a "full catch" for landlubbers including prime rib, chicken, ribs, steaks, and salads.

Sounds good, but taste, you ask??? Delicious! I went with a group of friends and was able to mooch some of everyone's. We began with the sashimi, fresh Ahi tuna with Japanese wasabi and shoyu. Sushi-lovers will appreciate the superior texture; it melts in your mouth. Next, the Panko-Dipped Calamari (squid) were deep-fried, served with a savory guava sauce. Finally, the famed Hawaiian Poke Rolls and rare Ahi tuna sauteed in rice paper with sweet onions. It may sound odd, but remember "when in Rome...". You won't regret it.

For the main course, I endorse the Parmesan and Herb-Crusted Fresh Fish, sauteed with Panko, macadamia nuts, lemon and capers. Swordfish is a passion of mine, but this was incredible. Although I wasn't able to sample much of the other dishes (due to "growling" every time I moved my fork near my companions' plates) I tasted and strongly urge you to try the Seared Seven-Spice Fresh Fish...oh yum! Do try this! Fresh sashimi-grade Ahi tuna seared rare with spices, papaya hot mustard sauce over a pickled bok choy. Wow, it will render you speechless. For those of you who love clam chowder, enjoy the Fisherman's Chowder -- creamy-style with clams AND fresh fish. I'm buying stock if they ever "can" this chowder.

Duke's is open for lunch - Monday through Saturday from 11:30 - 2:30. Dinner is served nightly from 5 - 10 p.m. Sunday Brunch is a "food celebration" from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Don't forget, the "Barefoot Bar" is a MUST!!!
