Celtic Appreciation
There is great interest nowadays in Celtic music and Celtic spirituality. In the
5th and 6th centuries there was a vibrant spirit alive in the songs and prayers
of the people of Ireland and Scotland. The celebration of the goodness of creation
was central to their daily life. Though the climate was often harsh and inhospitable,
people chanted and worshipped a God known in the seasons, the environment and
the ordinary experience of daily living.
Attempts to suppress this vibrant, though sometimes unorthodox spirituality were
almost successful. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Gaelic songs were forbidden,
fiddles and pipes collected and burned. Luckily chants and songs were collected
in the Late 19th Century and one of the finest of these continues to touch us.
This day this night
may I know O God
The deep peace
of the running wave
The deep peace
of the flowing air
The deep peace
of the quiet earth
The deep peace
of the shining stars
The deep peace
of the Son of Peace
