Cooling System part 2

This weeks article is a follow-up on troubleshooting your cooling system. Don’t worry, we won’t have a test on this. It’ll just help you feel a little more confident about driving your car.

Hoses: Always check hose for chafed or bumped areas that may cause untimely and costly failure. Soft hoses indicate deterioration inside. This deterioration can contaminate the cooling system and cause particles to clog the radiator. Swollen hose or oil soaked ends indicate danger and possible failure from oil or gas contamination. Harden hoses can fail at any time.
Solution: Inspect and replace all hoses as necessary.

Engine fan clutch, visually inspect for substantial fluid leakage from the clutch assembly. If problems are noted, replace the clutch assembly. With the engine completely warmed up, turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Turn the fan by hand; some drag should be evident. If the fan turns easily, replace it.

Solution: Inspect and replace as necessary.

Antifreeze /coolant - general information. Anti freeze is highly toxic if ingested. Never leave anti freeze lying around in an open container or in puddles on the floor. Children and pets are attracted by its sweet smell and may drink it. Never dump used antifreeze on the ground or pour into drains.

Note: Check with local authorities or Malibu Auto Parts about the disposing of used antifreeze.

Solution: Keep antifreeze containers covered and out of reach of children.

Old or contaminated coolant or likely to cause damage and encourage the formation of rust and scale in the system.

Solution: The cooling system should be drained, flush, and refilled every 30,000 miles or 24 months, which ever comes first.

Note: The exact mixture of antifreeze to water which you should use depends on the relative weather conditions. The mixture should contain at least 50 % antifreeze, but never contain more than 70 % antifreeze. Consult the mixture ratio chart on the antifreeze container before adding coolant. Hydrometers are available at most auto stores to test the coolant.
